Then God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” God made the expanse, and separated the waters which were below the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. How long did it take God to create the earth? The Bible is silent on how long these time periods were. The big question is not how long God took, but rather how He did it. God created the world in an orderly method. He did not make plants before He created light or separated the waters. It is not important how long it took God to create the earth, whether it was six literal days or a few billion years; to be precise, He created it exactly as He wanted it.
I believe the Bible is to be taken literally and the earth was created in six consecutive twenty-four hour periods, followed by a seventh day of rest.
The water-covered planet was evidently also encircled by water vapor. God spoke and created an expanse between the waters on the earth’s surface and the clouds to create a covering high above the earth. These waters of the heavens created a greenhouse canopy to protect the earth. Thus, there was a separation between the seas and the mists of the skies.
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up the deeps in storehouses.” Psalm 33:6-7 NASB
“When there were no depths I (Wisdom) was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. “Before the mountains were settled, before the hills I was brought forth; while He had not yet made the earth and the fields, nor the first dust of the world. “When He established the heavens, I was there, when He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep, when He made firm the skies above, when the springs of the deep became fixed, when He set for the sea its boundary so that the water would not transgress His command, when He marked out the foundations of the earth; Proverbs 8:23-29 NASB
“Have you entered into the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep? “Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness? “Have you understood the expanse of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this. Job 38:16-18 NASB
As the creative voice of God spoke the earth, the seas and the skies into existence, He can speak into our life today, if we will allow Him.
