of 1989 were a series of pro-democracy demonstrations in Beijing, China, led primarily by students. The movement, which began in April, called for political reform, freedom of speech, and an end to government corruption. It culminated in a violent crackdown on June 3–4, when the Chinese government deployed military forces to suppress the protests. Hundreds, possibly thousands, of civilians were killed as troops opened fire on demonstrators2.
